5 tips to combat writer's block

Updated: Feb 21, 2020

This is your time, what you do with it is entirely up to you. You chose to read this post on writing instead of writing. Makes sense. Here are 15 things I do when I'm Blocked.

You put words on page, Go!!

1. Read your last entry. Maybe there are things that you could add, or embellish to make it more interesting, then BAM!! You are writing again, problem solved.

2. Ask someone to read your work. This will generate feedback, criticism, cynicism and an opinion other than your own; which, in turn may re-kindle the fire in your creative soul.

3. Read some of the classics. Reading is like cool-down exercises for writing. Reading the classic books will help you get back to the tried and true basic mental stretching techniques that have stood the test of time. Reading the classics will stretch your imagination to new heights.

4. Buy a writing Prompt journal. These things didn't exist when I was young, which is probably why I have such an amazing imagination, creativity, and humility; because I had to come up with the prompts myself. Generate 5 writing prompts now, just try to not finish the idea; it will be nearly impossible.

5. Listen to some Music. Music conjures images, emotions, and elevates our creativity and productivity. I create a playlist for each book I am writing to help inspire scenes and maintain mood.
