Writer's pictureDream Diaries

What I learned from 20 years of procrastinating.

Thanks for taking the time to learn more about me as an author, & creator. I have created all of my life. I began my life creating works of art; paintings and drawings mostly. Sometimes I'll fall down a rabbit hole of creativity, the later be stuck at the bottom of a dried-up well of creativity.

I love telling stories, I do this to pass the time and to entertain others. I always have a movie idea playing out in my head. Often I want to unload the images in my mind through painting and writing. At a young age I would start sharing my stories with others. Some of my friends encouraged me to make these stories into movies. So I do what every self-respecting writer does; move to Hollywood.

Mostly I worked as a Carpenter but it was still Hollywood. I met some actors, read some scripts and started writing in that style. I let some friends read my first script, one was a professional editor for a production company. I know what you are thinking, "Did you get discovered? Did you sell your story?" No. I was rejected, criticized, even had my ideas stolen. But I didn't let that totally crush my hopes and dreams. I took their words under advisement. One suggestion was that I should re-write my story as a Novel instead of a script. I was too visual. It makes sense, I like art. When I write, I see the scene playing like a movie in my head. So I wrote.

20 years later, Life happened. Wife, kids and all, but never quit thinking about my stories. I almost gave up on art as well. Every now and then I would re-light the fire under my butt and finish my ideas. That's when I discovered a life lesson, give yourself a Dead-line. Have an End in Mind.

The Dead-line gives us a sense of obligation and urgency, even if it is a fictitious date, you are compelled to beat the clock. So do this first, create a count-down, a Dead-line to finish.

Getting out of your own way. As life happens, don't let it distract you from finishing your goals. You just need to control the one thing, the one person you have power over, YOU. Now tell them to get out of your way, or wait, stand-down, stand-aside while you finish your dreams.

Excuses kill creativity; STOP making them and start making your dreams a reality!
